As the Director of Recreation, you will lead the planning, organization, and execution of events, recreational programs, and special activities across the town.
You will collaborate closely with team members to deliver a wide range of leisure services that enhance the quality of life for our residents.
Your role involves strategic input into budgeting, policy formulation, and the development of departmental strategies.

Key
Responsibilities:
Develop and manage a comprehensive suite of programs, events, and activities in partnership with staff.
Contribute to the creation of the department's budget, policies, procedures, and strategic plans.
Supervise and oversee full-time, part-time, seasonal staff, volunteers, coaches, and instructors.
Act as the department's interim leader for events and programs in the Director's absence, ensuring continuity of operations and service delivery.
Essential Functions:
Directly supervises and mentors full time, part-time, and seasonal employees.
Understands and manages recreational Budget/Capital Improvement Plan and forecasts for future growth.
Responsible for the overall coordination, administration, implementation, supervision and evaluation of a comprehensive recreation program, to include youth and adult programs and activities; senior programs, special interest classes; summer camps; youth and adult sports; ball field reservations; park and playground programs; after-school programs; cultural programs (music, art, drama, dance, etc.
) and other identified program needs for all segments of the community.
Ensures all safety protocols are followed at town events and programs.
Work with the Town of Waxhaw communication team on promotions for the department, including taking lead on story's, print, and social media content.
Arranges schedules, locations, supplies, transportation, resources, and personnel for town events and activities.
Educates the public on the benefits of recreation; promotes and markets the department and programs; solicits community input and needs in making programming decisions.
Hires, trains, assigns, motivates, provides communication, conducts employee performance coaching and evaluation of subordinate personnel, and provides documentation and participates in disciplinary action procedures.
Assists Director in developing and implementing long and short-term strategic plans in support of department and Town.
Assists Department Director in the preparation of the annual operating budget.
Prepares news releases and helps maintain website information to make sure information is up-to-date and accurate.
Interprets local ordinances, rules, and regulations.
Deals tactfully and courteously with the public.
May serve as an advisor on committees throughout the Town.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Deep understanding of recreation principles, planning, and administration.
Proficient in evaluating community needs across all demographics and designing inclusive programs.
Skilled in marketing and promoting recreational programs using modern methodologies and technologies.
Knowledgeable in municipal ethics, confidentiality, and compliance with local laws and regulations.
Strong analytical skills for problem-solving and strategic planning.
Effective leadership and supervisory skills, emphasizing teamwork, motivation, and performance development.
Able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with officials, citizens, employees, supervisors, and participants.
Familiarity with personnel supervision laws and regulations.
Physical Requirements:
This job requires occasional lifting of up to fifty pounds, frequent lifting of up to twenty pounds, and constant lifting of up to ten pounds.
You should be able to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, grasp, use your fingers fully, feel, talk, hear, and perform repetitive movements.
You need good eyesight for tasks like preparing documents, analyzing data, using a computer, and measuring things accurately.
Clear speech and hearing are essential for effective communication and understanding detailed information.
Work may be indoors or outdoors, sometimes without protection from the weather, and may involve noise and potential exposure to health risks.
Education and
Experience:
A Bachelor's Degree in Parks and Recreation or similar field is preferred.
An associate degree or an equivalent combination of education and 7
years of relevant experience will be considered.
Special Requirements:
Possession of a valid driver's license in the state of North Carolina and/or South Carolina.
CPR and First Aid certifications or ability to obtain within three months of employment.
Ability to earn CPRP (Certified Park & Recreation Professional) status within three years.
Frequent evening and weekend hours may be required.
